Description

Located 12,000 LY from earth, IC 410 is a dusty emission nebula surrounding a 4 million year old star cluster, NGC 1893, in Auriga. The strong stellar winds generated by these hot young stars have sculptured the 'tadpoles' irradiating the head and blowing back their dusty tails.

The image consists of only two hours data (10m subs) taken under a very bright moon, at ~f4 in my SCT, using my new Altair 183C camera fitted with a Baader 7nm filter. Apart from a little star distortion at the edges, common with this focal reducer, and the telltale 'starburst' amp glow from these CMOS chips, I'm pretty happy with the result. I really need to take my darks and flats at the same time with this camera to ensure I replicate the imaging setup as closely as possible. Revision B is processed in Nebulosity v4 to try and remove the 'stretch marks'.

Anyway, I like these two little 'tadpoles' racing for the prize, and as a new grandfather to be, dedicate this to my son and daughter-in-law, and their unborn baby; whether a boy or a girl, we are delighted for them.

Title: 'Stretch and curves' - I don't think I better go there!

Description: An alternative version processed in Nebulosity v4 using stretch and curves, followed by noise reduction. I like the smoothness of this version, but it is difficult to draw out too much detail without 'exposing' the amp glow remaining at the right hand edge (despite dark subtraction).
